Data stolen from over 3.8 million WhatsApp users in Bangladesh: report

According to a study by the research-based online journal Cybernews, 3.8 million Bangladeshi users’ phone numbers were among the 487 million WhatsApp users whose information was stolen and sold on a “well-known” hacker forum.

Users from 84 different countries, including the US, UK, Egypt, Italy, and India, are represented in the database, which is reportedly from 2022. The numbers are all associated with WhatsApp users who look to be “active,” according to the hacker who carried out the attack.

The stolen database, according to the allegation, comprises the phone numbers of more than 11.5 million UK users and over 32 million US consumers. However, it appears that Egyptian users were most severely affected by the breach, with a potential risk of 45 million people.

The hacker also claims to have close to 10 million Russian user numbers, over 6 million Indian user numbers, and over 35 million Italian user phone numbers.

WhatsApp may have experienced one of, if not the largest data breaches in its history. WhatsApp has over two billion monthly active users worldwide.
